Finding that your video game habit is getting in the way of your job?

Having the feeling of or thinking “What am I doing with my life?” is something that everyone feels at some point. When you’ve got a video gaming habit that’s eating into your life and you wish for it to just stop, you may find yourself asking this question every time you want to put an end to this habit. This feeling of “What am I doing with my life?” tends to rear its ugly head when we least expect it or even while we are playing video games.

So, the questions I am going to put to you are:

1) Have you been wondering why you would rather stay at home and play your video games more then go to work?

2) Do you feel you can do more with your life?

Well I can tell you that this is not entirely down to your video game habit. This is mainly down to the fact that you have no interest in your current occupation and use video games as a way to make up for that. Your escaping to the world of video games because it provides you with the joys and accomplishments that your life outside of video gaming does not give you. Not as fast anyway.

Video games gives you that rush of adrenaline, focus and happiness that you do not find in your current occupation. The effort you put into your video games gives you more positive challenges and rewards much faster than the efforts you put into your job. Unfortunately, your life is more of a long-term investment and the challenges you face now at work or in school, take much longer to pay off and reward you compared video games. Video games only provide the short-term investment of satisfaction or rewards however, it is also short lived and your back where you started until you get your next fix.

Here are some tips for you if you wish to break this circle:

Step 1:

Note everything that you dislike about your job/work and why you feel that way. Make sure your write down why it is you dislike it and why you went for the job role.

If the job you are in is something you love, then you really need to take some time to think about what matters most to you. Your job or your video games? Why do you love your occupation however jeopardise it by playing video game excessively? Note down what it is about this job that you love so much and what are your life goals with this job. This will help you to remember why it is you wanted to do this type of work for most of your life.

Step 2:

Now make a list of occupations you have always wanted to do (if you dislike your current occupation) and why you wanted to do them. Now this could be anything, from what you wanted to be when you’re were a child or teenager to what you want to do now. Remember that most people will be working for 40 years of their lives, so think to yourself, what is it I want to do for the next 40 years or rest of my life?

Step 3:

Make a note of the amount of time you spend playing video games and how this can affect you ever getting to your dream occupation. This will help you understand the amount of time you spend playing video games instead of doing other things in your life you would like to do. For example, you might want to go back to school and learn to become a medical profession or graphics designer. Then you could see how much of your time spent playing your video gaming will affect you from doing this.

If you really want to change, then you need to change the habit that is currently affecting you. Even if it means changing your job to something else that will support you to learn a new skill or trade. It is important that you replace your time spent playing video games with something else that will have a positive impact on your lifestyle.

Now if you are sitting there thinking I am too old to start over. Well, your in for a shock. Your never too old to start over. There are people who go back to their studies after their children have all grown up and can take care of themselves. Many people have made huge job transitions and been successful regardless of their age. The only thing that will hold you back, is you. Even if your finances aren’t looking good, then do overtime at work, save as much as you can and research around your dream career path as much as you can. This way you will get a head start on your fellow colleagues/students.

I know its lot easier said then done, but if you really want a better life, a better job, a balanced lifestyle of playing video games and doing other things that you love, then you will find a way. You just need to make that change today. Take action today and start a new.
